Since 1975, the Day Studio has taught professional high-end painted finishes, murals and color always maintaining the highest standards of technical and creative artistry. The Day Studio offers three areas of comprehensive study, Finishing Techniques, Mural Techniques, and Color Mastery. Small classes intensify learning and can open new areas of professional expertise. In the 1980's the Day Studio began teaching fractal geometry as part of the difficult but often ignored design aspect of instruction. Discovered in 1973, fractals have revolutionized learning in all fields especially art and interior design. Because Fractal proportions, Nature's way of seeing and measuring, guarantees natural balance and realistic beauty, learning to work with fractals gives you a competitive edge. By training the eye to see spatially, you learn to intentionally create hidden fractal chains and mathematical ratios in a finish or interior. Mastering Technique, Design and Color guarantees success in any artistic endeavor and creates a portable skill you can always use. Each of the three Day Studio two week workshops provide a portfolio and a thorough foundation of techniques, tools, applications, mediums, paint chemistry, preparation, glaze formulas, supply sources and practical guidelines for bidding, contracting, presentation and selling. |

Glazing, Marble, Plaster & Fractal Layout Gilding & Metallic Patinas (5 days) High-end gilded finishes for flat and carved surfaces, acid-washed metallics for decorative special effects and old world, distressed patinas are important interior design options today. These elegant, exclusive finishes produce an eye-catching portfolio of useful decorative techniques and accent finishes for moldings, interior detailing, ceilings, walls and furniture. Metal leafed finishes and gilding, an indispensable component of a contractor's skills, techniques and portfolio. Glazing, Gilding & Graining (2 weeks) This most important workshop teaches all the essential techniques needed for faux finishing and decorative art and produces a working portfolio of the most current and useful finishes. Master the skill of glazing and color layering to create finishes on walls, floors, architectural moldings, cabinetry and furniture. Create marbles and plasters with realistic depth, movement and flow. Become skilled at spotting and creating fractals, the basis of all design layout and composition for any painted finish, and be able to eliminate undesirable hidden repetition and patterns that disturb a finish. Learn gold leafing and acid-washed metallics, decorative special effects and old world, distressed patinas for elegant high-end gilded finishes on moldings, interior detailing, ceilings, walls and furniture. Master the woodgraining techniques and variations in pattern and color of mahogany, walnut, oak and maple for realistic straight-grains, hearts, and burls to match existing woods and interiors. Create samples of stone, marble, gilded, woodgrain, glazed and plaster for presentation and selling, the complete foundation and finish portfolio of a fully skilled decorative artist. Woodgraining (3 days) Woodgraining is used to accent and embellish interiors or match existing woods and is part of every contractors skill set. Realistic woodgraining is easy to learn with subtle variations in pattern and color distinguishing one wood from another. Patterns fall into three main categories, straight, heart (wavy), and burl (curly), and wood colors, though mostly brown, can be light or dark, with yellow, orange, or red undertones. Woodgraining technique applies a glaze, allows it to partially set and re-opens it with a brush or graining tool, then tones the color with a subtle overglaze. Mahogany, Walnut, Oak, Maple, Cherry, Stain mixing and color. Color I - Lighting & Color: Mixing, Matching & Color Combination (5 days) The success of any finish or interior design scheme today is color. The lighting, climate, architecture, patterns, textures and scales along with client personality dictate the colors, design and finishes. Learn the three essential Laws of Color which cause the color shift created by adjoining colors, layered colors and the effects of natural and artificial lighting and feel confident choosing color. Create charts that quickly recognize the pigments in paint samples, fabric, carpet, and chip deck colors. Additional charts choose companion colors by identifying common ingredients for complete color schemes. The only way to learn to demystify how colors will react is by mixing colors and seeing them change. Find out how to identify a client's inherent color bias and overcome your own so clients are immediately happy with color choices. Fabric, carpet and rug samples are used to teach mixing, matching, correction and color combinations. For color consultants, interior designers, contractors, decorative artists and anyone in the business of recommending or specifying color. Color II - Color Consulting: Clients & Color Selection (3 days) Color schemes are woven together along with design in important but not obvious ways. Great design and color combining depends on contrast levels and fractal proportions. Bring real life room situations to test color and design ideas and put together coordinated colors, related design ideas and finishes for floors, walls, ceilings and trim. Using manufacturer chip decks, determine pigment content and value. Focus is on the more difficult, hard to identify neutrals, and too easily shifted whites and yellows. Using complex color area rugs, you choose colors and predict what will happen when coverage goes from a small chip to an entire room. Learn how to use the LRV Percentage measurement to choose optimum contrast for color blocking, multiple values and sheens of one or several colors. Analyze and identify the pigment content in natural woods of floors and furniture to ensure common ingredients are present in selected colors. Create color bridges with multi-hued accent finishes using gilded and acid washed metallics and pearls. Become skilled at the huge design trend of subtle lighting and cast shadows to create nuanced color by illusion. Understand generational bias in design and color and determine a client's own psychological inclination for color. Then with confidence, coordinate entire color schemes for the total personalized look that a client wants and needs. Color I is prerequisite. Color - Color Mastery (6 days) A powerful color workshop specifically targeted for interior design, decorative art, color consulting and personal use make this workshop exceptional color training for contractors, decorative artists, interior designers and anyone in the business of recommending or specifying color. The success of any finish or interior design scheme today is color. Light, climate, architecture and furnishings dictate color. Understand Light and control Metamerism with the three Laws of Color and Light and predict accurately color shift from the effects of natural and artificial lighting, adjoining and layered colors.
